Building Codes and Green Building Standards
The building code arena is every changing; it can be a daunting task to keep up. Adding Energy Star in to the mix along with various evolving ‘green building’ standards; only makes the task bigger.
As a leader in the industry, CrystaLite strives to stay ahead of the pack by producing products that exceed these standards. Our CrystaLite’s ES Skylight backs this claim as we are the first (and currently the only) manufacturer of a 30/30 skylight eligible for the Federal Tax Credit resulting from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009.
This area of our website serves as our outlet to deliver product information and other relative information to you in regards to the building codes and the emerging ‘green building’ standards.

CrystaLite proudly introduces the markets first skylight to qualify for the 30/30 Federal Tax Credit resulting from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009. The ES Skylight is 53% more efficient than the new 2010 ENERGY STAR criteria, and retains a transparent view outwards with an exceptional visible transmittance value! View Tax Credit Information.
High Visible Light AND Clear Glass
The industry trend towards advances in thermal insulation results in an opaque glazing solution. We did not follow that trend. The new ES Skylight not only retains a high visible light transmittance (VT) of 0.49, but also retains a see through view outwards – like clear glass.
Tax Credit Criteria
Energy Star windows, doors, and skylights may qualify for the Federal Tax Credit, but not all of them. The Federal Tax Credit set levels that far exceed those set by Energy Star. Unlike Energy Star, the criteria for the tax credit is the same for windows, doors, and skylights. The products must have a U-Factor and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficent (SHGC) of 0.30 or lower.
Currently, CrystaLite’s ES Skylight is the only skylight on the market eligible. Refer to our Energy Star and Tax Credit Simplified handout for more information, as well as the Energy Star website.
Documentation
Homeowner’s seeking to receive the tax credit do not have to submit a copy of the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement with their tax return, but must keep a copy of the statement for their records.

2010 Energy Star Criteria for Windows, Doors, & Skylights
The Energy Star criteria for skylights have been lowered from a U-Factor of 0.60 to a 0.55 for most of CrystaLite’s dealer area. Refer to the maps and criteria below.
We are currently in a labeling transition period, which will last until April 1st, in which manufacturers can label to the old standard or the new. CrystaLite has already begun rolling over to the new labeling procedures.
Full criteria changes are available in the Program Requirements and as well as from the Energy Star website.
Energy Star and the 30/30 Federal Tax Credit
Energy Star skylights may qualify for the Federal Tax Credit, but not all of them. The Federal Tax Credit set levels that far exceed those set by Energy Star. Currently, CrystaLite’s ES Skylight is the only skylight on the market eligible. Refer to our Energy Star and Tax Credit Simplified handout for more information, as well as the Energy Star website.
LEED v2.2 / v3.0 Verification
CrystaLite skylights, overhead glazing, and sunrooms can help project teams achieve LEED Certification. These products always satisfy two LEED prerequisites and always facilitates the achievement of 1-17 LEED credits under the LEED for New Construction and Major Renovation (version 2.2) system; and 1-27 LEED credits under the LEED for New Construction and Major Renovation (version 3.0) system.

Environmental Feature Details and Definitions
Energy Code Compliance
Buildings seeking LEED Certification must meet or exceed the ASHRAE 90.1 Standard for energy performance. CrystaLite skylights, overhead glazing, and sunrooms are NFRC certified and rated; and have been tested and verified for air infiltration, water penetration, and structural loading exceeding the prescribed criteria as outlined by ASHRAE 90.1. Unit skylights are certified by the National Accreditation & Management Institute (NAMI) to the NAFS Standard (AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S. 2/A440). CrystaLite field glazed systems have been tested by an AAMA/ISO accredited test laboratory and verified by an independent structural engineer.
Energy Efficiency
Optimizing energy performance results in lowering operating costs (thus saving money for the building owner), and this use of less energy means using less environmental resources. CrystaLite skylights, overhead glazing, and sunrooms make buildings more energy efficient by delivering natural lighting and, when utilizing opening skylights, deliver natural ventilation to indoor spaces. More daylight and natural ventilation results in less use of electrical and mechanical systems; and the use of less electromechanical systems results in better energy performance.
Recycled Content
Using materials containing recycled content is intelligent and resourceful. The use of recycled materials reduces waste and reducing waste helps the environment. CrystaLite skylights, overhead glazing, and sunrooms are manufactured with recycled aluminum and glass material content.
Regional Materials
Buying locally manufactured products reduces environmental pollution associated with transportation. CrystaLite skylights, overhead glazing, and sunrooms are manufactured in the state of Washington. The majority of the materials for these products are extracted, sourced, and produced within 500 miles of CrystaLite’s manufacturing plant in Everett.
Ventilation
Buildings seeking LEED must comply with ASHRAE Standard 62.1 – Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality. Manual and mechanical operators are available for CrystaLite skylights, overhead glazing, and sunrooms. Operable products facilitate ventilation code compliance, increase the natural ventilation for indoor spaces, and reduce energy costs – all of which positively impact the environment.
Daylight and Views to the Outside
The amount of daylight and views in a space directly impacts occupant comfort. Daylighting an interior space and giving the interior space a connection to the outdoor environment makes occupants feel better and thus enhances occupant comfort and improves human performance. Designing spaces to have more daylighting also reduces reliance n electromechanical systems, thus saving costs and reducing environmental impacts associated with energy use. CrystaLite sunrooms and vertical wall systems are your clear choice for providing optimal views to the outside environment.
Skylight Code Compliance
CrystaLite skylights have been tested and certified to all standards and requirements set forth by the building and energy codes.
Glass skylights are typically built for residential skylights utilizing tempered glass for both panes in an insulated unit. Some code requirements exist which require laminated glass. All commercial glazing applications typically require laminated glass for the inboard pane. Review the following handout for more information.
NFRC Rated for Energy Efficiency
All CrystaLite skylights and custom slope glazings have been NAMI certified and NFRC rated for U-factor, Solar Heat Gain (SHGC), and Visible Light Transmittance (VT).
Standard Skylight Structural Testing
Standard skylights are NAMI certified to the NAFS Standard per commercial and residential code requirements for air infiltration, water penetration and structural loading; commonly referred to as ‘AAMA Testing.’
Slope Glazing Structural Testing
- Deflections in structural members shall be limited to L/175 under fully loaded conditions, per ASTM E 330 at 150% of positive and negative wind load design pressures for a duration required by design wind velocity without assembly evidencing material and deflection failures or permanent deformation of structural members exceeding 0.2% of span. Compliant to International Building Code 2006, section 2405 Sloped Glazing and Skylights.
- Air infiltration per. Air leakage shall not exceed 0.06 cfm/sq. ft. of assembly surface when tested with a pressure of 6.24 psf. Compliant to IECC 402.4 Air Leakage.
- Water penetration per ASTM E 331. No water penetration when tested with a pressure differential of 30.0 psf. (Light Frame limited to 6.24 psf). System designed to drain migrating moisture occurring from condensation to exterior through weep drainage network. Compliant to International Building Code 2006, section 1403.2 Weather Protection.
Green Building Criteria
Green building practices beyond Energy Star are becoming more main stream, and skylights have a big role in green building design by allowing free, natural, daylight into a home or business. Regional manufacturing and recycled content are important roles as well. CrystaLite will assist in selecting the appropriate frame and glazing configuration to meet your green building needs, including assistance in achieving LEED credits for commercial buildings and Green Globes points for residential.
